I can now make color choices that make the statement I intend to make instead of a mash up of out-of-harmony colors.

About the Artist

Daniel Dean is a visual and musical artist trained in commercial graphic design, screen printing, sign making, and hand lettering. Working primarily with acrylics, his paintings are reserved for moments of deep emotion and personal reflection. Influenced by Van Gogh, Dalí, Magritte, Gauguin, and Gordon Onslow Ford, Daniel’s work blends technical skill with expressive intent—capturing the intersection of inner experience and creative instinct.

Artist's Statement

"As a color blind person, I did not know what I was not seeing my whole life. I had a fundamental misunderstanding of my own condition. It was not until my best friend bought me a pair of Enchroma glasses that I finally understood and saw red and green as they ought to be seen. So, for my art, I had been using colors that matched what I was perceiving without knowing that sometimes they were wildly off. Family and friends would ask why I was using a certain color in a painting and I would answer, “because that’s the color it is!” Also, for graphic arts projects, it caused me to choose shades of purple, for example, that were not accurate to the object I was representing. I’m sure I unintentionally created some interesting color combinations."
