Constantin Malmare

For me, color often feels like hearing a song on the radio rather than on a hi-fi system—I understand its composition, even if I can not fully experience its sensory richness.

About the Artist

Constantin Malmare is a multimedia artist whose practice explores perception, systems of image-making, and the shifting boundaries between the digital and the material. Grounded in a background in fine art and illustration, Malmare’s early work reimagined found imagery through intricate black-and-white line interventions, creating optically vibrant compositions influenced by Op Art and visual distortion.  His practice has since evolved to include AI-generated imagery, extending an ongoing investigation into pattern, authorship, and the aesthetics of machine vision. Malmare holds a BA (First Class Honours) in Fine Art and Illustration from Coventry University, with international experience at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, and an MA in Print from the Royal College of Art, London.  In 2015, the was awarded the prestigious Batsford Prize. Their work continues to explore how contemporary technologies alter the production, perception, and interpretation of visual culture.

Artist's Statement

"I initially shifted from painting to drawing, drawn more to line than to color. As my practice evolved into a more digital and multimedia direction, I began working primarily in black and white, or using RGB and CMYK halftones composed of patterned lines. Instead of applying flat color, I became interested in creating the illusion of color and depth through structure and repetition. Working with computers and phone apps gave me the tools to analyze color more precisely. During my studies in chromatics at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, I learned about pigment and ink production, the full spectrum of contrasts, and color theory. For me, color often feels like hearing a song on the radio rather than on a hi-fi system—I understand its composition, even if I can not to fully experience its sensory richness."
