EnChroma Partners With CleanHub to Remove Ocean-Bound Plastic With Every U.S. Order

Each order placed on EnChroma’s U.S. website will fund the verified recovery of 2.2 pounds of plastic before it reaches rivers and oceans.

EnChroma, creator of patented eyewear for color blindness, today announced a new partnership with CleanHub to help prevent plastic waste from entering the world’s oceans.

Through the partnership, every order placed on EnChroma’s U.S. website will fund the recovery of 2.2 pounds, or 1 kilogram, of ocean-bound plastic. EnChroma has committed to funding the recovery of 3,000 kilograms of plastic waste, with progress tracked through a publicly available impact report.

Ocean-bound plastic is plastic waste located in coastal areas where formal waste-management infrastructure is limited or nonexistent, placing it at a high risk of entering rivers, waterways and the ocean.

“EnChroma helps people experience more of the color and beauty in the world around them, so it’s natural for us to play a part in protecting that world too. Our partnership with CleanHub turns every U.S. order into measurable action, helping recover plastic before it reaches the ocean while supporting communities that are building stronger local waste-management systems.”

— Chris Dykes, CEO of EnChroma

From Better Color Vision to Cleaner Oceans

EnChroma’s mission has always centered on helping people with color blindness experience more of the world’s color, from vivid sunsets and green forests to the colors of the ocean.

The company’s commitment to ocean protection was inspired in part by its collaboration with surf and lifestyle brand O’Neill. The O’Neill × EnChroma collection features performance sunglasses designed for surf, sun and outdoor environments, bringing EnChroma’s color-enhancing lens technology closer to the places where color is often at its most vivid.

The collaboration also highlighted the growing threat that plastic pollution presents to oceans, coastlines and marine ecosystems. EnChroma’s CleanHub partnership now extends its environmental commitment beyond the O’Neill collection to every order placed through the company’s U.S. website.

“There is no denying that eyewear requires protective packaging, some of which currently contains plastic. We are working to reduce that material wherever possible while also taking measurable responsibility for the plastic we continue to use.”

— Chris Dykes, CEO of EnChroma

Tracked, Verified and Publicly Reported

CleanHub is an environmental technology company that funds professional plastic-waste collection in coastal and waterway communities where adequate waste-management services are not yet available.

Collection teams recover plastic from households, waterways and fishermen’s bycatch before the material can reach the ocean. The collected waste is then sorted, allowing recyclable materials to be directed to local recycling markets and non-recyclable materials to be processed using the most environmentally responsible option available.

Each stage of the process is documented through CleanHub’s Track & Trace technology. Collection teams use a mobile app to photograph and record the waste, scan identifying codes and log location, weight and processing data.

The system creates a digital audit trail from collection through final processing. CleanHub’s plastic-recovery process is independently verified under TÜV SÜD standards, allowing EnChroma customers and the public to follow the company’s impact through a live online dashboard.

Supporting Local Communities

In addition to preventing plastic from reaching the ocean, CleanHub’s collection networks help develop more reliable waste-management infrastructure in coastal communities.

CleanHub-supported collection hubs are required to follow standards covering worker health and safety, fair wages and working conditions. Partner organizations also create employment opportunities for women, including through women-led collection initiatives and local self-help groups.

CleanHub additionally works with coastal villages to provide education about plastic waste, helping communities understand how waste reaches the environment and how improved collection practices can reduce pollution over the long term.

CleanHub’s broader mission is to prevent 50% of new ocean plastic by 2030.

EnChroma customers can follow the company’s verified plastic-recovery progress through its live CleanHub impact report at cleanhub.com/impact-report/enchroma.
